Padalai (Gate) – The lost tradition of Tamils
Getting rid of older things are usual with the time-clock. There was once a gate in front of the entrance is called ‘Sankadappadalai’. The usage of that special gate tradition is now fades away from the lives of Tamils. ‘Sankadam’ means the difficulties. Trespassers may be got a relaxation sitting under this gate after the long walk or being tired. So the gate carried out name of Sankadappadalai because of its actual use. The gate is made up with a roof over it and had a stone bench to sit under the roof. There was a clay pot of water nearby. Some of the gates were only with a roof over it.
At present these gates are rarely in use. Few have the gates similar to this. Former days land was fully fenced and it has one entrance with a small gate. Those gates are made of palmyrah leaf stem or with surface layer peeled sticks or wooden plates. The gates have an axis to rotate the gate for and against. Nowadays we use metal farmed gates or iron gates. And the ‘Sankadan Padalai’ has vanished from our life styles.
